Karen Olson
Artist statement
When trees converse, the air fills with chemical substances, fragrances, hormones, and electrical connections. Placing myself in the middle of this conversation, I am illuminated by it. This fascinating human-nature connection—and how it supports mental health and interpersonal communication—has become the subject of my latest projects.
My work is concept-driven and lens-based, exploring subjects like grief, trauma, empathy, and forest bathing. I create intimate two- and three-dimensional landscapes that are ethereal and immersive, offering viewers a safe place for respite, recovery, and emotional exploration. Through cycles of construction, deconstruction, and reconstruction—using both physical materials and digital files—I mirror nature's patterns of growth and decay. Elements are digitally captured, blended, and intertwined. Fibers, papers, and photographs are formed and sculpted to add weight and texture. In my creative process, I maintain an open dialogue with materials and subject matter, embracing collaboration and interchange.
