Sandy Weisman

Artist statement

Making books has given me a wonderful means to explore ideas, images, words, and structure all at once. For me, the book form allows great variety in combining an idea – the mychhorizal fungus that sends messages and help to nearby trees, for example – as well as experimentation with form, such as We Hovered a Little. I would say most book artists have a deep love of paper, and I’m no exception. Choices of paper often guide my ideas, followed by the need to put an idea into methods and form. While I love color, I often work within the gray scale, and while I love holding a bona fide book, I often create sculptural books that question what a book can be. The variety and possibilities are limitless!
